CONFERENCE ON EARTHQUAKES

From 7 to 11 September an international conference “Earthquake Science and Hazard in Central Asia” will be held in Almaty. It is organized by Shakhmardan Yessenov Science and Education Foundation jointly with Earthquakes Without Frontiers international project (UK) and under akimat of Almaty. The event also involved Satpayev Kazakh National Research Technical University, Institute of Seismology of Kazakhstan and Satpayev Institute of Geological Sciences, where the conference will take place.

One of the ideologists of the conference, Professor James Jackson explained that “one of its major goals is to generalize the results of the latest research on the nature of earthquakes, escaping threats and active tectonics in Central Asia”. “We strive to create effective communication between science, society and state agencies with the goal of promoting the development of science about earthquakes. Through the exchange of results and modern techniques of research, we will encourage researchers in the field in Kazakhstan and to raise the awareness of the public and individuals responsible for the security of the population, in order to ultimately reduce the hazards of earthquake,” said Professor Jackson, a member of the Royal Society and head of the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge.

In addition to Mr. Jackson as part of the international delegation to the conference, scientists from Nepal and Germany, India and Armenia, Italy and Iran, Kyrgyzstan and China will also attend the event. In the program of Almaty event there are an overview of the modern science on earthquakes in Kazakhstan and the Tien Shan mountains and the discussion on the impact of science on policies of mitigating the risks of earthquakes in the region. In the last days of the conference – 10 and 11 September – for the participants of the conference field trips to the faults and landslides in Almaty oblast will be organized. Professor of tectonics at the University of Oxford Richard Walker and Kyrgyzstan expert in the field of seismotectonics and modern geodynamics Kanatbek Abdrahmatov will be in charge of the trips.

At the conference the “Earthquakes: From A to Z” brochure will be presented. The publication will contain basic information about this dangerous phenomenon: from the first earthquake registered to how to be prepared for natural disaster. The brochure will then be distributed for free to schools and universities of Almaty.
