KAZAKHSTAN WINS 6 AWARDS AT IESO
IESO 2018 International Olympiad on Earth Sciences ended in Thailand. According to results in an individual classification, the Almaty schoolboy Aknazar Kazhimurat won a silver medal, while his teammate Asylbek Umurzak from Astana won a bronze medal.
— In addition, Kazakhstan received awards in mixed teams. Kamila Kazhen from Uralsk with her team won gold awards in two events – Earth System Project (ESP) and International Team Field Investigation (ITFI). The goal of both is to test the capabilities, skills and knowledge of children in the conditions of international team. Shakhmardan Yessenov Foundation finances the trip of the Kazakhstan team to this Olympiad for the second consecutive year, – said Nursultan Nurmukhanov, the coordinator of the Foundation’s programs.
— I find great favor with the team competition. They strongly pulled us together, the future scientists from different parts of the world, motivated not so much to competition as to the collaboration, which is significant and important for the future of science, – K. Kazhen believes.
IESO is a unique Olympiad. This is the only competition of schoolchildren in the world, which are held simultaneously in a complex of interconnected sciences. Our other compatriots – Islam Aituganov and Assylbek Umurzak – won bronze awards of this international knowledge contest in their teams. As a result, Kazakhstan has 6 awards.
— Thanks to the fact that the program of the Olympiad included team projects with children from different countries, I got acquainted with a large number of my peers and learned about the global problems concerning the Earth sciences, – said I. Aituganov.
Another prize-winner of the Olympiad, A.Umurzak shared his impressions:
— The Olympiad challenges you, just forces you to make mistakes and, of course, learn from your mistakes.
A few words about winners: Aknazar is 17 years old and he set himself the goal of entering Harvard. His peer Kamila is fond of photography, the schoolgirl is a prize-winner of regional and international Olympiads. Islam studies in 11th grade and is engaged in basketball in the school team. After secondary education, he is planning to study civil engineering. A tenth-grader Assylbek, teaches the assembly of Rubik’s cube for pupils of one of the children’s centers in Astana in his spare time,.
For successful fulfillment of the tasks, the schoolchildren needed knowledge of geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography and astronomy. Participants of IESO 2018, which took place on the campus of Mahidol University, were 280 schoolchildren and mentors from 39 countries. The selection for the national team of Kazakhstan for participation in the Olympiad in the beginning of the year was conducted by the corporate fund “Zhas geolog” (Young geologist). Last year, the performance of our young compatriots at the IESO in France ended with one victory in the individual classification (silver) and two in the mixed international teams (bronze).
