5 KAZAKHSTANIS WILL GO TO THE OPEN UNIVERSITY
The Shakhmardan Yessenov Foundation’s competition for summer internships in Great Britain started at the end of March. The idea behind the internship is to support students and early professionals in chemistry, oil and gas and applied sciences. In April the private charity gathered 59 applications, picked top 17 and the best five were selected by program’s partner, Open University in UK. The winners were announced on May 22.
All of them will undertake an internship this summer in the United Kingdom’s major e-learning and research institution, the Open University . The winners are Laura Kaliyeva (from Aktobe), Albina Zhetybayeva (Shemonaikha), Beksultan Abylkhani and Guliaym Sagyndykova, both from Almaty, and Yerkanat Kanafin(Stepnogorsk). The five British professors who will supervise Kazakhstani students are Satheesh Krishnamurthy, Ellen L. Heeley, Carl Boardman, Nicholas Turner and Simon Collinson. Each professor contributed personally to the final stage of the selection process.
“The candidates seemed to have carefully crafted their applications to highlight their suitability. I felt the quality of all the students was extremely high and they all had some relevant research experience beyond their undergraduate degree,” — thinks prof. Carl Boardman (at the photo on the left).
“It was extremely difficult to choose as the 17 short-listed candidates all had unique qualities. I was very impressed with the standard of English from all the applicants. I greatly look forward to working with these Kazakh students and I am sure we’ll see some successful project resulting in some interesting research results. I hope the students all learn a great deal from their time at the Open University,” — prof. Nicholas Turner (at the photo on the right) added.
“Our foundation believes in the power of individuals and we try to empower them by supporting their pursuit of scientific research. We looked for talented people who are willing to use the opportunity to grow professionally and contribute to developing Kazakhstan’s scientific capacity and we found them with the help of our partners from the UK,” — commented the foundation’s executive director Aiganym Malisheva.
The Open University — is one of the highest-rated research institutions in the UK and a world leader in flexible distance learning. Beginning in 1969, the OU is the largest academic institution in the United Kingdom; it has taught more than 1.8 million students and has almost 170 000 current students.
