The competition for the Shakhmardan Yessenov scholarship received a record number of applications – 392. Application process opened on January 23 and closed at midnight on March 13. When is the final round? When will well know the names of scholarships holders, the best students in Kazakhstan?
An annual Shakhmardan Yessenov scholarship has been awarded to 5 best students in geology and related technical fields since 2013. This year, however, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees decided to increase the number of scholarships up to 20 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Academician celebrated in 2017. Applicants had to meet certain requirements to enter into the competition, such as the citizenship of Kazakhstan, current student at one of Kazakhstan’s higher educational institution and excellent academic track.
– Last year just 72 applicants contended for 5 scholarships, but this year it is 392 applicants for 20 scholarships! Which means we have a competition of 19 people per scholarship. Our preliminary assessment was we should receive around 280 applications, but this number, we did not expect it, – recounted the foundation’s office manager of Aigerim Sultan, who were in charge of receiving all requests.
Among the participants were students from over 50 universities in Kazakhstan, KazNRTU, KBTU, Nazarbayev University, International University of Information Technologies, Suleyman Demirel University, Karaganda State Technical University, Dulati Taraz State University and Korkyt Ata Kyzylords State University. The Foundation staff noted that the quality of applications has also increased. One-third of the pretenders for the scholarship have an IELTS certificate, or are studying English. Many participants in the spirit of recent market trends have made the application personally shot and edited as a creative video.
