YESSENOV MEMORIAL: AND THE PRIZES GO TO…
Almaty, March 31 – April 1. The Shakhmardan Yessenov Memorial is a chess tournament among geologists and is dedicated to the Geologist Day. This year, the tournament also honors 90th birthday anniversary of Shakhmardan Yessenov, a prominent Kazakh geologist and science communicator.
The tournament’s venue in Almaty, Satpayev KazNRTU, gathered 37 players from different regions of the country. Initially, over 50 people showed interest and registered for the event. National chess arbiter Kazbek Tokubayev led the team of arbiter who judged the tournament.
The main prize of the competition, which amounts to hefty 450 thousand tenge went to Marat Zholamanov, while the second place runner up Aidar Baimoldinov’s performance earned him 250 thousand tenge. Both are employed as specialists at the “Institute of High Technologies” LLP that is under the national “Kazatomprom” company. The third place the arbiters awarded to Beket Zharokov, who is also the oldest participant of the tournament and a former KazNRTU graduate, now retired.
— The tournament was successful. On the eve of Geologist Day, we managed to unite the representatives of this field from all over Kazakhstan. Even a chess player from Shieli village in Kyzylorda region, who works in “Volkovgeology” expedition, arrived for the tournament. Among other participants, there were students of the Satpayev University as well as practicing professionals and veterans of geology, — said Nursultan Nurmukhanov, coordinator of Foundation’s programs.
