In 2024, he completed intensive training at the Summer School for Data Analysts, and in the summer of 2026, he will go on a research internship at one of the world’s leading laboratories. What helped him win twice in the Shakhmardan Yessenov Foundation’s competitions, and most importantly, why does he need these victories?

How I chose medicine
In the 11th grade, my parents advised me to get a fundamental education, as it would be useful in any field. At that time, I was already involved in science, and so, eventually, I chose medicine. My father, who is a doctor himself, talked me out of it. But nevertheless… Interestingly, my passion for medicine only emerged after my third year, when I began to realize what truly fascinated me.

Medicine and data analytics…
By the time I completed my internship, I already had a solid foundation of medical knowledge: I had passed the USMLE medical licensing exams and finished several internships in the USA. However, I felt that this was not enough to pursue a career in science seriously and in depth. It was around that same time that I learned about the YDL Program at the Yessenov Foundation. It was this very program that became the missing link, a bridge to big science, as it opened up entirely new and highly promising fields for me – data analytics and machine learning. I realized that if I wanted to work on neural implants, which was exactly the area I wanted to pursue, I needed to attend the Summer School for Data Analysts offered by the Yessenov Foundation.

What helped me win?
For both programs – YDL and Research Internships – I applied already having a strong background: a high GPA, scientific publications, and other achievements. However, I believe that the key factor was my plans in the field of neurosciences. I shared them in the competition essay, adding new details during the interviews. During the competition, it is important not to be afraid of being genuine and to boldly declare your ambitions. They tell your story best. I approached the practical stages with the utmost seriousness, starting to work through the tasks as soon as I received them. I also watched a lot of YouTube videos – there were similar cases of code writing there.

How to study successfully at YDL?
During my studies at YDL, there were only two of us from the medical field with no background in programming. I had to work hard to keep up with my groupmates. I was already used to learning on my own, so I watched many tutorials on YouTube, analyzed and reproduced other people’s codes. I actively used AI to gain a deeper understanding of the material. And of course, the support from peers, assistants, and teachers helped a lot. Asking for help is perfectly normal.

What did I gain from the Summer School?
The YDL intensive laid the foundation and provided an understanding of concepts – what to apply, where, and how. I now use Python on a daily basis. Projects involving pure machine learning don’t come around very often. I mainly focus on preprocessing clinical and epidemiological data and its statistical analysis. In my free time, just for myself, I work with EEG datasets on Kaggle to stay sharp.

Why did I apply for the research internship?
It was a natural progression in my journey with the Yessenov Foundation. After mastering machine learning at YDL and applying the other knowledge I gained there in practice, I grew significantly as a scientist and published another dozen articles. I have now reached a new stage in my development, and need practical skills and connections with international research groups working on brain-computer interfaces (BCI). This is what I am particularly interested in at the moment.

Expectations for the internship
They are high. I plan to acquire skills in processing brain activity data. I want to master conducting the experiments themselves – working with such patients is very specific, and each of them requires a unique approach. I also hope to learn how to formulate hypotheses during the research process. But most importantly, I want to establish long-term connections with professors for future collaboration. This is networking, and it could make it possible to carry out similar research in Kazakhstan.

Beyond science
In my free time, I enjoy reading scientific articles. I can spend hours reading comfortably. For me, it’s not a continuation of work or study, but a form of relaxation. I also make time for sports and hiking – it’s both important and enjoyable. There is also a seasonal family hobby – gardening, particularly working with grapes, which require careful daily attention.

Plans
I am currently working as a researcher at KazNMU. Over the next couple of years, I plan to continue developing in the field of BCI. I intend to apply for a PhD program, followed by another residency. So it looks like I will be studying for at least another 12-13 years. As you know, medical education is a lifelong journey.

P.S. While this feature was being prepared, it became known that Dimash has chosen the Sensorimotor Bionics Group laboratory at the University of Chicago as the place for his internship, and this fall he will travel to the United States to implement his grant.
