The girl is a master’s student at the International School of Engineering at D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University (EKTU). Last September, she was selected for the English Language Program which is implemented at the East Kazakhstan university by the Shakhmardan Yessenov Foundation. What did the specialist in transportation management, traffic, and transport operations gain from the program year?

Ayaulym, why did you choose logistics specifically?
It’s simple – in school, I loved geography and mathematics the most. And logistics is where they intersect in real life. It is an in-demand field that requires systematic thinking, calculations, analysis, and process development. Logistics also helps reduce unnecessary expenses, both financial and resource-related. An economical and even eco-friendly approach is close to me. In my master’s program, I went a step further and focused on traffic safety. It is all about responsibility and structure. It resonates with me.

What motivated you to apply for the Yessenov Foundation’s English Language Program?
I have been studying English for a long time, but I felt a lack of live communication. When I heard that the Foundation was launching a course taught by a native speaker, I didn’t hesitate for long. It was a chance to go beyond textbooks, speak more confidently, and learn to perceive the language in its natural rhythm. And yes – the Program met my expectations by a hundred percent.

How did your language learning begin? And how was your year in the Program?
I have been studying English since 10th grade – starting with language courses, then a speaking club, and later individual lessons. Through the Foundation’s Program, the learning became more systematic. We were grouped by proficiency level, and with my Upper Intermediate level, I was placed in the IELTS preparation group. We practiced each part of the exam step by step – writing essays, receiving feedback and advice from our teacher. He didn’t just teach, he shared practical tips and tricks on how to succeed in the exam. Thanks to that, I began writing more coherently and speaking more fluently.

Why did you take the IELTS exam?
The reason is that I am planning to apply for a PhD program, and that simply isn’t possible without the IELTS. The Program helped me boost my skills, and thanks to my active participation and success in studies, I had the opportunity to take the exam for free, funded by the Yessenov Foundation. I ended up scoring 5.5, which is enough for my goal. I wouldn’t have prepared that well on my own. It is more than just a program – it is a launchpad.

Ayaulym, what do you enjoy doing outside of your studies?
I am a book lover. I enjoy discussing books, learning something new about them, and sharing my impressions. I have been a member of two book clubs for several years now – one in Ust-Kamenogorsk and another online, based in St. Petersburg. And I adore travelling. I’m not just interested in sightseeing – I want to feel the spirit of a place, learn about its architecture, and talk to the locals. Travelling is the best way to practice English and pick up a few new words from other languages.

What’s happening in your life right now, and what are your expectations for the coming years?
I have just defended my master’s thesis and am currently looking for a job in my field. I want to join an international company here in Kazakhstan, so I am actively improving my Kazakh and business English. The next step is to pursue a PhD in economics. It won’t be easy, but I am serious about it. I believe that if you move toward your goal step by step, even the most ambitious plans become achievable.

Ayaulym is from Ust-Kamenogorsk.
