OFF TO THE OPEN UNIVERSITY

On March 27 the Shakhmardan Yessenov Foundation launches a new grant program to support students and professionals in chemistry, oil and gas and applied sciences. The foundation will hold a competition to select five winners who will spend the summer of 2017 undertaking an internship at the United Kingdom’s major e-learning and research institution, The Open University (OU).

All prospective applicants should meet the qualifying requirements: undergraduate, graduate and post graduates and specialists with a degree in one of the following fields: chemistry, ecology, biotechnology, oil and gas, materials science and technology of new materials, chemical technology of inorganic substances, chemical technology of organic substances, HSE, petrochemistry, nanomaterials and nanotechnologies.

“Our foundation believes in the power of individuals and we try to empower them by supporting their pursuit of scientific research.  We look for talented people who are willing to use the opportunity to grow professionally and contribute to developing Kazakhstan’s scientific capacity” – said the foundation’s executive director Aiganym Malisheva. She added, “Therefore, we extend our invitation to our bright young Kazakhstan students and young professionals who speak fluent English, and are studying or working in industries related to chemistry and oil and gas.”

The internship will take place at one of the highest-rated research institutions in the UK and a world leader in flexible distance learning, The Open University. Beginning in 1969, the OU is the largest academic institution in the United Kingdom; it has taught more than 1.8 million students and has almost 170,000 current students. The foundation will cover the winners’ visa, insurance, round-trip plane tickets, accommodation and other expenses necessary during the three-month internship period.

“Due to the features of the program we will only accept documents in English. The competition will take place in two stages. The first stage will take place in Kazakhstan where the Shakhmardan Yessenov Foundation panel will review the applications and essays to choose the best and we will then send our shortlist to the United Kingdom where a panel of academics from the OU will ultimately decide the five winners.  The applicants should be ready for a Skype or telephone interview”,  the coordinator of the program Ilzira Aldagarova reported.

These documents will explain the application process and includes the list of professors and the specific research topics for the internship, which applicants should choose from.  We will accept applications until 23:59, April 23.  The foundation will announce the winner by May 23, 2017.
